Stock Market Opens in India
Trading in the stock market happens all the weekdays except the weekends that is on Saturday and Sunday and the holidays that are mentioned by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

All the Retail customers have to do their transaction or the trading through the brokerage agency between 9:15 A.M to 3:30 P.M on the weekdays.
Most of the investors does the trading or purchasing/selling the particular stocks in India on the major stock exchanges is the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE).
Timings of the Stock market is the same in both the exchanges.
The trading timing for the commodity market on (MCX) is between 10:00 AM to 11:30 PM from Monday to Friday.
The normal trading timing for the (NCDEX) market that is on soft commodities is between from 10:00 A.M to 5:00 P.M from Monday to Friday.
Further, there is a division of the timings of the stock market into three sessions:
- Pre-opening Session
- Normal Session
- Post-closing Session
Let’s discuss in brief about these timing sessions:
1. Pre-opening Session
The duration timing for the pre-opening session is between 9:00 AM to 9:15 AM and it is again divided into three sub-sessions.
- 9:00 AM to 9:08 AM
This period is for placing the orders.
In this period you can place the order for either for buy or sell of stocks.
The trader or the investor can modify or cancel his orders in this period.
No orders can be placed after a period of 8 minutes during the pre-opening session.
- 9:08 AM to 9:12 AM
This time segment is useful for the determination of the price of the security.
The price matching principle is done with the corresponding of demand and supply.
In this further, you cannot modify or cancel the buy/sell order during the time.
- 9:12 AM to 9:15 AM
This period of time is used as a buffer period.
This is used for the smooth translation of the pre-opening session to the normal session.
2. Normal Session
Normal session starts from 9:15 AM to 3:30 AM and all the transaction that is made during this time period follows the bilateral order matching system.
For the price determination, it is done through the demand and supply forces.
The bilateral order matching system is volatile, which includes the market fluctuations that are ultimately a reflection of the security prices.
The Pre-opening session was started to take control of the volatility of the multi-order system.
3. Post-closing Session
The post-closing session starts at 3:30 PM.
This is further classified into two sub-headings:
- 3:30 PM to 3:40 PM
This time is used for the calculation of the closing prices.
The weighted average of the prices is used for calculation.
For calculating the closing prices of the indices then you can directly take from the prices of the listed securities that are considered.
- 3:40 PM to 4:00 PM
This duration is used for the post-closing session from 3:40 PM to 4:00 PM.
At the closing prices, if the orders are placed for buy or sell of the stocks in the post-closing session and if the buyers/sellers are available then the trade will be confirmed at the closing prices.
Muhurat Trading
The Indian Stock Market usually closed for the transactions for Diwali.
However, there is a one-hour trading session conducted from 5:30 PM to 6:40 Pm as this period is conducted as auspicious.
